The Pursuit of Locality

In present days, the ideals and values that once guided the construction projects of residential areas, as controversial as they may have been, have been replaced by market powers and profit making. 3D printed wall elements usually include some sort of infill pattern hidden inside the wall, between two smoother lines. The infill is a crucial component of the wall, designed to strengthen it.

Since the main printing material is local sand from Makhtesh Ramon, the smooth clean line seemed out of context. The infill pattern hidden inside the wall is closer to the natural sand and stone walls of the crater the smoothness of the straight outer lines.

This new 3D printing technique exposes the infill pattern, thus giving the wall texture and volume. furthermore, it takes the infill’s structural qualities one step further, using it as construction by changing it’s thickness and density.

What once was behind the scenes has now become the main show, and plays two roles at the same time – giving the wall it’s texture, rhythm and volume while reinforcing itself.

The curvature shape of the walls and the mirror-like infill patterns further contributes to the structures’ stability.
